Tom Phillips survives the Japanese interment and gets to work rebuilding at the end of the war. He is made assistant pastor of Christ the King parish in the French concession. Mao’s PLA takes control of China and Catholics are persecuted by the new government. Phillips remains in Shanghai, even as the Korean War heats up and the US and China become enemies. Phillips is imprisoned by the communists and suffers greatly.
