"Sustainable Development is a commitment to respect and care for the community of life. It is economic growth that promotes the values of human rights, care for the natural world, and the striving for the common good of the whole earth community, especially the poor and most vulnerable. It involves sustaining the present generation without imposing long-term costs or penalties on future generations. It replaces the use of non-renewable resources with renewable ones and reduces the consumption of all resources. It entails reuse, recovery, and recycling wherever possible; and replenishment or restoration of the natural balances affected by our actions. It implies sound life-cycle planning and economics—economics that truly reflect the environmental and human costs of our technologies and decisions. Sustainable development will succeed only if it expands to include a vision of sustainable communities which hold all creation as sacred."

Questions for Edwin Martinez, SJ - a Colombian Jesuit at Seattle Prep
1. Where are you currently missioned and how’s it going?
Now I am doing my regency at Seattle Preparatory School. I teach Spanish for sophomores and seniors and also I teach one religion class for freshmen called “Foundations of Faith”. I think this experience has been a great learning one for me as a Jesuit scholastic. I had taught in Colombia as apostolic work when I was in first studies. However, now I am at school the entire time and in some way the school is my life. In this life I try to find God as a Jesuit but also as a teacher and a language-learner, because English is my second language and I am still learning it.

The Columbia River Watershed: Caring for Creation and the Common Good
An International Pastoral Letter by the Catholic Bishops of the Watershed Region
Link to text in English, in Spanish, in French
The Catholic bishops of the Columbia River Watershed offer a pastoral reflection spoken with a voice of faith and compassion, offering insights drawn from the teachings of Jesus Christ and from the Christian tradition through the ages, particularly the developing Catholic social ethical thought of the past century. They teach with the late Pope John Paul II that "Christians, in particular, realize that their responsibility within creation and their duty towared nature and the Creator are an essential part of their faith." (The Ecological Crisis: A Common Responsibility.)
They hope that the values they express, the issues they raise, and the insights they offer will serve as a catalyst for further discussion toward the resolution of the complex issues of the Columbia River Watershed. They invite people to explore with them the implications of the Christian idea of human stewardship of creation, and to effect a spiritual, social and ecological transformation of the watershed.
The text of the Pastoral Letter is available in English, in Spanish, and inFrench. The pastoral letter booklet, incorporating photos taken throughout the region with the text, is available through the Washington State Catholic Conference at 206-301-0556 or via email at
